- The king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) is the second largest species of penguin, smaller, but somewhat similar in appearance to the emperor penguin.
- The Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazella) is one of eight seals in the genus Arctocephalus, and one of nine fur seals in the subfamily Arctocephalinae.
- Everyone was given a blue jacket so we’re easily identified by the expedition team in the middle of nowhere. Box: a single human.
- It’s quite a hike from the ship to where the photo was taken.
- Stromness is an abandoned whaling station on the northern coast of South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic. It was the destination of Sir Ernest Shackleton's rescue journey in 1916. It is the central of three harbors in the west side of Stromness Bay, South Georgia.
