Before leaving for Europe for a month, I looked up the Michelin Guide and made some picks. Tipo was one of the few restaurants that I put in the list to try.
I went there for lunch today — it was surprisingly good, in a down-do-earth environment and a very knowledgable staff.
I was especially impressed with the wonderful texture added to the cured mackerel, which the waitress told me was “just rice” crisped with the torch — #crazyisgood
The strozzapreti is firm enough to be al dente, though lean towards the soft side. The ragu has a strong taste that reminds me of a goat (hah).
Underneath the seemingly ordinary soft serve is a sauce that’s slightly sour and mixed with strawberry fruits. They remind me of the jellies seen in bubble teas, but a bit softer — party in the mouth!
Overall, it’s a very wonderful meal — casual, unpretentious, and very enjoyable. I had zero expectations going there, but would 100% recommend everyone visit before they become too busy to book in the future.
Tipo received a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2024. At 22 GBP, this meal was a steal.

😋 Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking
Named after the fine Italian ‘00’ flour that’s used for making pasta, this relaxed and comforting restaurant could quickly become your go-to in Edinburgh’s New Town. British, Mediterranean and Italian cuisines all influence the menu, which provides plenty of flavor and value for money. The small plates selection is mightily appealing, but it's the seriously good homemade pastas like bigoli cacio e pepe that most catch the eye.
